Under the Silver Stars of LoveScott Jones on Slow Down Tallahassee's Curly Cuh Slow Down Tallahassee – Curly Cuh (Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation)
From the first line in the first track, ‘Angel of Death’, it’s clear that Curly Cuh is lyrically going down a darker road than previous Slow Down Tallahassee releases. Sinister secrets and twisted feelings hide behind the upbeat electro-pop that we’re accustomed to; it’s like Helen Love’s long lost sister stumbling from the wrong end of a dark Sin City alleyway, whispering nursery rhymes of adolescence, with tears in her eyes as she treads on the cold pavement slabs where her innocence was lost forever. Distorted synth-pop melodies bounce along like an early 80s disco with simplistic nursery rhyme like lyrics jumping in-between drum beats. Torn hearts, crushed souls and lost dreams fill lullabies plagued with disenchantment, but just as it seems all hope has faded behind the clouds, a twinkling aurora shimmers for a second in ‘Under the Silver Stars of Love’ where the words “love never fails you, just wait and see” jump out like a dolphin at sea before vanishing in the vastness of the ocean. It’s a shedding of naivety and a fitting epitaph for Slow Down Tallahassee to bow out on, with what they have described as an inevitable loss of innocence. © 2011 Scott Jones
