Summer Dance Party
So after a week in the wonderful Cornish town of Perronporth sitting in the dunes with Hesse and Keroauc, watching the waves and wishing I could surf with the fleets of surfers that kept jumping out of the dunes (including Doctor Alice Roberts by the way), followed by an idyllic weekend of indiepop at a steam railway station , it’s brilliant to come back to an excitable email from Connie pointing me towards some new sounds from Mansfield, Pennsylvania’s The Bossettes. I included their cut-glass beautiful ‘Coats and Hearts On Fire’ on the last Pop Miwsig mix, which seems so long ago now, as it probably was. And I’ve included it on every mix I’ve given to friends since then. But in the time since, Connie and Kate, the original line-up of The Bossettes, have been augmented by three extra girls, Michelle (“handclaps and sweet beats”), Jen (“acoustic percussion, stepping, stomping, clapping”) and Maria Rose (piano), for more of that '60s girl group sound, and the results are, well, stunning… ‘Summer Dance Party’ is a wonderfully raw jangling girl group nugget that I could give my life for straight away. ‘Bubble to the Sun’ (a new version of the previously titled ‘Shooting Deer with Elephant Guns’, featuring that magic lyric “hey boy, chewing your gum / blow us all a bubble to the sun” which I’ve been meaning to make a shrine to on a t-shirt for ages now) is just the loveliest of melancholic odes, drenched in the most beautiful sentiments. And ‘Mmmda’ is the gently rolling, softly shimmering, poetic girl group confection of your dreams. The Bossettes are riding one of the most tantalising Pop waves out there at the moment. It’s the sound of your innermost Pop dreams brought to life in playful bursts of colour and sadness. It’s Pop in its rawest, most untouched form, spelling summer kisses in the sand… and sometimes you just have to say, brilliant. Oh, and you can download it all here .
