R.I.P The Vic Godard Of Folk
Ronnie writes with sad news about the demise of folk legend Davey Graham, he of the insanely funny LP covers and genuinely maverick mind. Some words from Ronnie... and a link to Robin Denselow's brilliant Guardian obit... "In April 2007 I visited the Zanzibar in Liverpool to witness a living legend performing live. After the supporting act had departed the stage I went to the bar. As I returned to my spot I noticed a tall elderly man shuffling nervously, hugging his cherished Martin guitar and chewing tobacco, coming closer towards my direction. The man was Davey Graham, the guitar genius, solely responsible for the 1960s folk revival and much of rock music. Introduced on to the stage Davey trembled and took a a break after several songs, only to return after reassurance and delivered a blues set no one has witnessed before, since and will never again. So long Davey Graham, strike a chord in the great blue yonder lad!" http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/dec/17/folk-blues-music "On a good night he was still capable of providing a reminder of why he was such a massive influence; one such performance was at the London Spitz, in September 2006. He came on looking like a cool veteran cowboy, in black hat and dark glasses, and played a set that included a Romanian dance tune, Irish pipe tunes and songs from South Africa, before announcing, "A bit of Bach, I think", and being greeted with as many cheers as when he launched into a blues..."
