Got sent this link for the second time this year by our Rich Bowen regarding a regular obsession of mine called Life Without Buildings, which I’m so glad he now shares in, and the lyrics make for amazing reading don’t they, like something out of a poetic trance. Talking about her best or most potent lines, or moments, and I particularly like the bit in ‘Love Trinity' when Sue says "I'm not willing to leave the visual world". Only came across it in its more profound sense recently through constant exposure to the live LP, but LWB are a little like that, new things hidden in the depths and clefts of the songs suddenly assailing you like they never have before, setting the light bulbs off in the head as the heart flutters, and that one becames particularly stand-outish and brilliant in light of the band splitting soon after for the very reason that Sue was too attached to her visual art.
LWB are a constant fascination, and listening back I’d say Sue Tompkins is up there with the purest of indie vocalists. I’ve thought about how the band actually works an unhealthy amount, coming to the conclusion that it’s maybe more aware of the potential for spontaneous magic of film and art than what I’ve been used to in music, but I’m not too sure… The only thing I am sure of is in the current Pop moment which is 4.30 on a Tuesday afternoon Sue, in her fierce individuality, comes across like an amalgam of artistic hybrids, setting her coiled missives out over her band’s rhythms and creating a whole new language of art.
It all suffices to remind me I must get hold of some of Sue’s visual art, and thus the point of this blog, does anyone know where I can get it? Answers on a postcard or email, neil@miwsig.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
