Gruff, Flipron, free drinks, and whatever else is happening Tonight...

So, beautiful day again and the prospect of Gruff Rhys popping into my hometown is one that fills the day with anticipation, even though I can’t quite work out where the crowd is gonna come from. The older guys who usually go and see the few artists they put on at the Parc and Dare have very select tastes (ie. nothing after 1985 and certainly nobody who wasn’t in a band that played in some kind of acceptable trad rock/blues combo before then), but the prospect of the magic man still excites. Saw clips the other night on the telly of the Ystrad Sports Centre Burburry gig he played along with Goldie Lookin’ Chain and The Automatic, and he said so much in comparison to them with just a stool and a guitar that it was embarrassing.

Other news and Paul has eventually got a place here where we can blog, hence this piece of wit and wisdom. I’ll also endeovour to put some hard work in each day by listing the gigs and everything that’s going on in the wonderful cultural haven that is Cardiff and of course the rest of Wales for your free and hungry perusal. Oh, and, more about it later, but we’ve booked the ace Flipron for what should be an amazing gig accompanied by the Robin Hood of Welsh cover bands The Con Artists at The Maindy Con, Ton Pentre on Friday May the 18th, and maybe also in Cathays the night before. I await final news on that one, so shall let you know. Have been dancing with my dog to the wonderful Hawaiin guitar decadence of an acoustic, worded version of live favourite ‘Skeletons on Holiday’ that comes with their new single, the howlingly grand ‘Dogboy vs Monsters’ (May 14th, Tiny Dog Records), and they’ve just won the well-deserved prize of a rare play on BBC 6 Music … http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/shaun_keaveny/bandaid.shtml About f**king time, you could say!

Remember your factor 500, iron your clothes, and check out what’s going on around the place tonight, I’ll list the typical places for now, but if you know of anything else, drop me a line… Not much in the way of bands, but Bait Shop at Barfly sounds rather grand. Free drinks for the first 50 through the door. NJ

Newport three piece Kyshera are going back onto the road after several months working on their latest CD release, the self titled ‘Kyshera’ EP – released in May. 2005 saw the band explode onto the live scene in Newport, Cardiff & London, leaving no venue unscathed! Having done 40 gigs in their first 7 months of gigging & building up a reputation as ‘the’ band to see, Kyshera decided it was time to take it ‘up a level’!

Kyshera are now back on the road with their notoriously energetic stage show, described as ‘mental’ by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, with a new band line-up, a new live set & the band are even previewing material from the forthcoming sequel album to Made in China which they are hoping to release later this year…maybe! Onstage, Kyshera mix live electronics alongside the onslaught of Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Drums & hanging Mannequins & gig dates as well as mp3’s, pics, merchandise, reviews etc can be found at www.kyshera.com.
