The Bobby McGee’s have been creating a steady stir over the last year or so, most recent antics including front-man Jimmy voluptuously pronouncing “shagging” in his broad Scottish accent on BBC radio, and afterwards shyly persuading 6 Music’s Tom Robinson to call him by his full title of Jimmy “Elvis” McGee. The Bobby McGee’s head the brilliantly coined “international tweecore underground”, which Los Campesinos! recently paid tribute to in a song title, “tweecore” being a term originally used in description of Bellshill indiepop heroes BMX Bandits a decade ago. It’s a term that McGee’s lead-man Jimmy embraces and revels in in true Groucho Marxist style. Jimmy’s affectionate put-downs of partner Eleanor McGee during the McGee’s live shows are becoming sharper and sharper, “here’s Eleanor – she stands in for girly vocals in The Bobby McGee’s” being one typical recent pearl, and such quips make for a fantastic contrast with the band’s songs, which are outwardly playful but essentially affectionate and romantic banjo, ukulele and recorder pieces. The Bobby McGee’s play the small O’Neill’s in Trinity Street, Cardiff, on Saturday January the 19th in a Pop Miwsig/musicOMH.com gig with support from local indiepop band Lucky Delucci and rising local act Pagan Wanderer Lu, and for all in attendance there’ll be a special discount for the traditional Twisted By Design club night at the nearby Dempsey’s later. The action at O’Neill’s starts at 7.30 sharp and because of the small venue you’re advised to get there quite early. A feisty riot of tweecore awaits!
