Back To The Future: Fragments and FairytalesMiwsig's Neil Jones looks forward to a 2007 steeped in the values of ’06.
If 2006 was the year of the re-establishment of unabashedly wondrous Pop, then let's hope that 2007 sees its chiselled protagonists increasingly dumfound the mainstream.
For me, '06 was a year when a select number of untaintedly terrific acts made records of such shimmering soul to leave us stubborn and shy gutter-dwellers smiling beatifically at the stars. And though the clouds were often in the way and the mainstream rarely listened, really, who cares?
Pop traditionally comes in waves, and it'll be intriguing to see what '07 throws up from the likes of both Omaha's Tilly and the Wall and Bradford's Ooberman. These were two bands that hit heights of unfettered creation in '06, Tilly releasing a tap-dancing, poignant lost American jukebox classic in Bottoms of Barrels, while Ooberman's Carried Away bequeathed to the world a startling concoction of spectral splendour from a poet's heart. For '07 it'll surely be a case for both of continuing on the same inspired groove. If Tilly and the Wall and Ooberman, along with cuttingly-cool Canadians The Organ (R.I.P), sassy Nashville riot Be Your Own PET, and the modern carnival of polka-dot dreams that are The Pipettes, formed the surf of '06's frantic ocean, then the swish of embryonic Scandinavian DIY bans provided an irresistible undercurrent. They're all there in the playground of my eyes, dancing like kaleidoscopic figures, so I hope not to overlook any by naming Lucky Lucky Pigeons , A Smile and a Ribbon , The Lovekevins , Rough Bunnies , Vitpals , Irene , De Agtige , Cats On Fire , Marching Band , Montt Mardie , The Mare , Swissair, Scaredeycat, Boat Club , Biker Boy , Boygirlme , Don Agbia , The Tough Alliance , The Concretes , Love Is All , I’m From Barcelona and After School Sports as not so much ones to watch, but potentially ones to die for in the new year. Tender as the night that spawned it, Pop traditionally moves in waves, nowhere more unpredictably than in the Land Of My Fathers. Here in Wales, '06 saw bands of variegated troubadours continue to pop up in the unlikeliest places, and as a result, for '07, I'll be putting my Father's money on a band of itinerant hip hop dreamers called Genod Droog to follow up their wondrous ‘Breuddwyd Oer’ track with an album of prolonged ethereal grace, while looking forward to more pastoral beauty and live thrills from fine young mystery-dwellers including Swci Boscawan , Winabego, Jakokoyak , Little My, Los Campesinos!, Plant Duw, Alun Tan Lan , and Rhondda's own Lucky Delucci and The Con Artists. As a young festival goer, '06 threw up a couple of unexpected revelations with the sophomore Huntingdon Secret Garden Party and the inaugural Salisbury End of the Road festivals. Huntingdon in deep summer was exquisitely outlandish, while an autumnal Salisbury provided its crowd with myriad new musical paths to explore deep into the winter months. With the prospect of the same patches of countryside returning to life this summer with similarly ingenious thrills, the hope will be to uncover more chest of slithering, exotic treasures. © 2007 Neil Jones
