The fifth in Miwsig's summer festival series takes in Huntingdon's Secret Garden Party
July 26th to 29th. Abbots Ripton, Huntingdon
Last year the Secret Garden Party turned out to be something of a magical event. It has been described as an affair of inspired lunacy and the best-kept secret on the festival circuit, and you’d have seen why if you’d attended, people flying down steep hills in wheelchairs and ninety crazed dancers crammed into a ten-man caravan awning masquerading as a dance tent with flaming limbs.
From lakeside scenery to bona fide “ganga tents”, crazy shape pullers to floating dance floors and tree houses, last year’s Party had most things, but if anything this year the musical fare goes up a couple of notches. Flipron return once more with their strange Hawaiian island stage decorations and fantastic baroque pop, along with crazy-inventor and last year’s leading man Thomas Truax, and a host of similarly mouth-wateringly odd indie heroes augment the cast.
There’s the new rave-shagging New Young Pony Club, Aberystwyth pop heroes Radio Luxembourg, Canadian pop-theatre legends Of Montreal, and the classy New York retinue Mia Riddle and her band. I’m From Barcelona will be regaling crowds once more with twenty-nine head wonder, Au Revoir Simone do their sultry verse and all-keyboard action, while the outlandish and romantic poetry of Herman Dune is absolutely made for the place.
The Garden ethos is one of laughing non-commerciality, charming asides like open fires, a kids cr・che, the tasty Pie-Minister and all the Nu-organic food traders helping it on its way, and the rolling Huntingdon countryside has never been so welcoming.
